FDA Information
The acronym FDA stands for the Food and Drug Administration, and has been around and functioning by 1906. The goal of the FDA is to protect the nation’s public health by supervising the safety of foods, drugs, dietary supplements, medical devices and cosmetics. The FDA also deals with sanitation requirements and disease control.
Subdivisions of the FDA
The FDA is divided into several subdivisions, each with its own specific purpose and function. These subdivisions include:
• The Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI)
• The Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER)
• The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN)
• The Center for Biological Evaluation and Research (CBER)
• The Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA)
• The Office of the Commissioner (OC)
• The Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH)
• The Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM)
• The National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR)
It’s estimated that the FDA regulates $1 trillion worth of consumer goods.
Recent FDA Information
Recently, the FDA has been cracking down on company’s who claim to provide health benefits for consumers. For example, in May 2009, the FDA warned the General Mills cereal Cheerios that they have to remove their popular slogan on each box that states it is “clinically proven to lower cholesterol”. In a formal letter that was sent to the General Mills company, the FDA stated that the labeling on the cereal box is a “serious violation” of their set federal rules.
The statements that claims to lower cholesterol makes the cereal eligible for the same rules and restrictions that apply to drugs, and an approved drug application is necessary before the slogan can continue to be stamped on boxes.
FDA Black Box Warning
The most recent activity of the FDA was to place a black box warning on all Reglan and Metoclopramide products being prescribed to patients. This warning is also extended to the generic Metoclopramide HCl brands. A black box warning gives consumers the indication that the product may carry significant risk or even life threatening side effects.
However, in the case of Reglan and Metoclopramide, this warning has come much too late. Many people have been irreversibly injured already, and there is currently no effective treatment available. If you have developed symptoms of tardive dyskinesia then you deserve compensation. Fill out our contact form and get a free legal evaluation right now. You shouldn’t have to suffer by yourself.
