Metoclopramide

Metoclopramide is a drug used for treating nausea and vomiting. It also speeds up contractions in the stomach, and assists with emptying the intestines. It is used in various types of medication, including Reglan, Maxolon,Octamide, Degan, and Mayeran. It is classified as a prokinetic drug and besides affecting the gastrointestinal tract; it also stimulates the muscles of the sphincter, and small intestine.

Clinical Use of Metoclopramide

Besides being used to treat emesis (nausea and vomiting), Metoclopramide can also be used to treat conditions associated with radiation sickness, malignancy, labor and infection. The drug has been shown to be ineffective against motion sickness, and also seems to have no effect on postoperative nausea in its normal doses.

Metoclopramide was previously used to treat patients with cancer or undergoing chemotherapy. However, a more effective drug has been developed specifically for this cause. This replacement drug is called Ondansetron (5-HT3 receptor antagonist).

Metoclopramide can also be given by an injection to help determine problems in the stomach or the intestines. When taken orally, the drug is usually used to treat diabetic gastroparesis. In the short term, the drug can be used to treat heartburn and or minor esophageal injuries resulting from acid reflux.

Are Metoclopramide and Reglan the Same Drug?

Yes. Reglan is a brand name for Metoclopramide, and carries all the same benefits and risks.

Can Metoclopramide be Dangerous?

Generally, the Metoclopramide drug will not be prescribed for more than 12 weeks. However, if it is taken for that period of time or more, there are some health risks that have been documented as a result. No patient should take Metoclopramide if they have a seizure or an epilepsy disorder. Also, if you have liver disease, diabetes, chronic depression or kidney disease, taking the drug could prove dangerous.

Taking the drug while consuming alcohol can drastically increase some negative side effects of Reglan and Metoclopramide, so its highly recommended that you don’t. Furthermore , many other medications can negatively affect your health if mixed with Metoclopramide, so consult your doctor before you begin taking it.

Metoclopramide Health Risks
