Long Term Reglan Usage

Tardive Dyskinesia, a serious, untreatable and sometimes permanent neurological disorder that can cause devastating facial contortions and uncontrollable finger movement, has been associated with the long term use of the drug Reglan.

Due to this devastating side effect, the FDA announced that the makers of Reglan and its generic, metoclopramide, must add a ‘black box warning’ to labels.

Metoclopramide is most often prescribed to treat symptoms of GERD, diabetic gastroparesis, post-surgical nausea and nausea resulting from cancer chemotherapy. It is also prescribed to increase breast milk production; Reglan Breastfeeding. In a recent study, it has been show that is safe for new mothers to take Reglan, although it has been shown to cause digestive problems in some infants as well as fatigue and depression in some new mothers.

Other side effects associated with Reglan include dystonia (a neurological disorder that causes twisting and abnormal postures), epilepsy, hypertension, Parkinson’s disease, renal insufficiency and persistent vomiting.
