Reglan Breastfeeding

Reglan (generic name Metoclopramide) is only approved for the short-term use (four to twelve weeks) for the treatment of GERD (gastroesophogeal reflux disease), diabetes gastroparesis and delayed gastric emptying and severe nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy. However, many prescriptions are written for over the twelve-week approved duration, with some up to one year.

Reglan is also used by nursing women to increase the production of breast milk. The drug, however, is passed on to babies through the breast milk where it may cause digestive problems.

Reglan is also known to cause side effects such as fatigue and depression in these nursing mothers as well as in the general population who take Reglan at higher than prescribed dosages or for longer than the approved duration. A severe and sometimes permanent side effect of taking Reglan at high and prolonged dosages is tardive dyskinesia, which causes uncontrollable facial twitches and unmanageable finger movements and often affects older women.
